We’ve been busy making jewellery hangers out of recycled wooden coat hangers. In this article we want to share how we make them as we love the whole process!
The first thing we have to do is to sand down the coat hanger to give it a good ‘key’ for the glue.
Then we go online and find napkins with the designs we want. 3 ply napkins are ideal for decoupage because they are very thin once the two blank layers have been removed. We do this very carefully by blowing on a pointed corner or dampening the napkin slightly at the side so the layers separate.
Then we carefully (there’s a theme here) cut out our shapes. Our style is to layer shapes over each other, giving our hangers a chaotic but fun look so we don’t worry about being perfect at this stage, we can trim them later if need be. We don’t want too many straight lines or neatness in our finished hangers. That would just be boring.
As we layer the shapes and stick them to the hangers we have to keep stopping and starting as the hangers get too sticky with glue. Once the whole hanger is covered, we leave it overnight to dry.
Then we start varnishing. It usually takes 5-10 coats to get the deep colour and shine we want and this part of the process is really relaxing. It’s exciting to see the colours becoming brighter and the shine bringing out the design.
Once the last coat of varnish has dried, we measure out the hooks, using a Bradawl tool to make a hole in the hanger for the screw hook. We use 8-10 hooks, depending on the design, for example, gothic or costume jewellery tends to be thicker and bigger than fine gold or silver jewellery so our skull and peacock designs have 8 hooks to allow more room for chunkier jewellery.
Then, there you have it – a fun present for someone else or a vibrant and unusual accessory for your own home.
We can make our hangers in a whole range of different designs that are feminine, masculine, childlike or just fun!
We can make them to suit a variety of interests, hobbies or special occasions. We can work with an external supplier to create bespoke napkins although this will cost more. Please contact us if you want something personalised for you.
We can also paint our hangers or decorate them with a personalised message in a variety of fonts instead of decoupage designs.
